Week of 5/22 - 5/26

 This week in Math, the students will be learning how to estimate, compare, and order simple fractions using fraction strips, number lines, and divided shapes. During Social Studies, we will continue to investigate basic economic concepts. The students will learn how families use budgets to plan what to spend and to save. (Next week, the students will practice making their own budget!) In preparation for a Science Chapter 6 test on May 31st, the students will be completing study review sheets in class.

Good Behavior Party!

 The students have reached their goal of accumulating 20 marbles in our class good behavior jar and are being awarded with a class party this Friday afternoon, May 19th.  I will provide the snacks; students will be permitted to bring in their tablets, iPads or other electronic devices that day.

 Students will have the opportunity to complete their Math Incentive Charts this week by passing the final multiplication quiz on the 12X table.  Make-up quizzes will continue to be given every Monday until the last week of school for students who need extra time to reach their goal. In Science, we will discuss how fossils form and how they are nonrenewable sources of energy.  We will also examine how air and water are used as resources.  Over the next few weeks, we'll be reviewing the Sight Words we've been practicing in class since February.  A list of these words will be sent home by the end of the week, and a final quiz will be given on Thursday, June 8th to assess your child's progress.

Week of 5/8 - 5/12

This week in Science the students will be learning about different types of soil and why it is such an important natural resource. We will be watching a video on volcanoes, landslides, tectonic plates, rivers, and weather and their effect on the creation of rocks and soil. In Math, we’ll be reviewing the geometric concepts covered in Chapter 9 in preparation for a test on May 16th.  We will also begin investigating division as it relates to multiplication.  In Social Studies, the students will be learning about latitude and longitude lines and how they help to determine location on a map.

Flowers for May Crowning

 This week on Thursday, 5/4, St. Leo's will have its traditional May Crowning to honor the Virgin Mary. All students are asked to bring in flowers for this special event!

 The students are looking forward to their visit to the Liberty Science Center on Wednesday!  The day will be spent exploring the many interactive exhibits geared to elementary school students.  I've also arranged for them to view Jean-Michel Cousteau's movie, Secret Ocean, on the IMAX 3D screen - a stunning look at  the beauty and diversity of life under the sea.  We will be eating lunch at the Science Center that day, so please make sure that your child brings in a brown bag lunch labeled with his/her name.  Gym uniforms are to be worn!

 This week in Social Studies, we will discuss how culture is transmitted through myths, fables, tall tales and legends. Students will learn about famous American legends, including Paul Bunyan, John Henry, and Johnny Appleseed. In Science, we will be moving on to the study of rocks and minerals.  The students will examine different kinds of rocks in class and learn how they are classified as igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic.  In Math, the students will continue to study area and perimeter of plane figures. They will also learn how to find the volume of solid figures in cubic units.

Easter Egg Contest

 It's that time of year again! Students are invited to enter their decorated Easter eggs for St. Leo's annual contest. All entries are due on Monday, April 10th; judging will be held on Tuesday, April 11th.  The top five eggs will be awarded prizes.  This is your opportunity to get creative!
