Number Sense and Money

In Math, the students have been comparing and ordering large numbers. They've been tackling some challenging problems, including ordering numbers with digits that are maddeningly similar, such as 19,889; 19,989; 19,998, etc.   They've also learned a technique to help them round numbers to the tens, hundreds, and thousands place.  (Be sure to ask them about the “gas station” rule for rounding!)  Later this week, we'll begin reviewing the value of coins and bills.  The students will practice how to count money by playing a spinning game called "Race to a Dollar!" They'll also use play money to purchase items from a "pretend" toy store.  Students will determine if they have enough money to cover the cost of certain items and compute how much change they should receive.
